What a Tech Pack Actually Is
A tech pack (short for technical package) is the single document that translates your product idea into a specification a factory can quote, sample, and mass-produce. It's the difference between "I want a 750ml stainless steel water bottle with a bamboo lid" and a document that states the exact dimensions, wall thickness, steel grade, finish, lid threading, gasket material, print method, packaging, and tolerances.
The idea lives in your head. The tech pack is what gets it out of your head and into a form a stranger in another country can build without guessing. Every guess a factory has to make is a decision you've handed to someone who has never met your customer.
Why the Tech Pack Determines What You Get
Factories quote and build against what you give them — not against what you meant. When your spec is vague, two things happen:
- Your quotes stop being comparable. If three factories each fill in the blanks differently, you're comparing three different products, not three prices for the same one.
- You lose your accountability. When a production run comes back wrong, "that's not what I wanted" carries no weight if the tech pack never said what you wanted. A defect is only a defect against a written standard.
A detailed tech pack does the opposite: it makes quotes comparable, gives the factory fewer openings to substitute cheaper materials, and gives you a document to hold them to when the goods arrive.
What Goes Into a Tech Pack
You won't need every element for every product, but a complete tech pack usually covers:
- A dimensioned drawing or annotated photo — every critical measurement called out with numbers. A reference photo with arrows and dimensions beats a paragraph of description.
- A bill of materials (BOM) — the list of every material and component: the body material and grade, fasteners, coatings, gaskets, thread, packaging. Name the material, not the category ("304 stainless steel," not "metal").
- Colors, specified in Pantone — give every color a Pantone code (the Pantone Matching System, https://www.pantone.com). It is the one color standard understood universally across factories, printers, dyes, and materials. "Navy blue" renders differently on every screen and every substrate; a Pantone number is the same reference in your office and on the factory floor.
- Measurements and tolerances — the acceptable range for each critical dimension (e.g., 750ml ± 15ml). A measurement with no tolerance is one the factory will interpret in its own favor.
- Construction and finish details — how parts join, surface finish, and print/engraving method and placement.
- Labeling and packaging — what's printed on the product, the care and content labels, the retail packaging, and the master carton. These get left out constantly and cause chargebacks later.
- Sizes and quantities — the size breakdown, colorway split, and order quantity per variant.
How to Build One Without a Product Designer
You don't need CAD software or a designer to start. A usable first tech pack can be built in a spreadsheet and a slide:
- Start from a reference sample. The fastest spec is an existing product close to yours. Buy it, measure it, and annotate what you'd change.
- Photograph and annotate. Shoot clear photos from every angle and add arrows, measurements, and notes directly on the image — any slide or markup tool works.
- Build a spec table. One row per attribute — material, dimension, tolerance, color, finish — with a column for your spec and a column for the factory's confirmation.
- Number and date it. Put a version number and date on the first page. You will revise this document, and everyone needs to know which version they're building from.
The goal of the first version isn't perfection — it's to remove the biggest guesses before you ask for a quote.
Common Tech Pack Mistakes
- Naming categories instead of materials. "Plastic" is not a spec. "Food-grade PP (polypropylene)" is.
- No tolerances. Without a range, every dimension becomes a negotiation you'll lose at inspection.
- Color by name. "Forest green" comes back a different green than the one in your head. Color is the single easiest thing to get wrong across a screen, a printout, and a factory floor in another country — so always pin it to a Pantone code, the only color reference understood universally across suppliers. A name is not a spec.
- Assuming the factory knows. They know how to make things; they don't know your product. Anything unstated is a decision you've delegated.
- No version control. Emailing "the updated one" with no version number is how a factory builds to a spec you replaced three weeks ago.
Give Firm Direction — Then Listen to What Comes Back
A tech pack should give the factory a concrete, opinionated starting point. Lead with a clear point of view — but don't be so locked in that you ignore what the factory tells you next, because their feedback is some of the most valuable information you'll get in the entire process.
A factory that knows your product will push back: this wall thickness will warp in molding, that tolerance isn't manufacturable at your target price, this material is food-safe but that one isn't, this construction adds a tooling step you don't actually need. That isn't a factory being difficult — it's a factory that has built this a hundred times telling you what you don't know yet.
A factory that sends back nothing but a price and a lead time is telling you something too. Either your spec genuinely raised no questions, or they simply want the order and will build exactly what you drew — mistakes included. The quality of their questions is how you tell the two apart.
This is why you send the tech pack to more than one factory, and why you do more than one pass. Comparing responses isn't only about price — it's about who understood the product. The factory whose feedback made your tech pack better is usually the one who will make your product better. Fold the good feedback into the next version, send the improved spec back out, and let the quality of the conversation — not just the quote — tell you who actually knows this product and who is only chasing a quick order.
The Tech Pack Is a Living Document
Your tech pack changes — after the first sample, after the golden sample, after the first production run teaches you something. Keep it versioned, and keep it as the single source of truth that your quote, your sample approval, and your inspection all point back to.
When the tech pack, the golden sample, and the inspection standard all say the same thing, quality stops being a matter of opinion.
