The Product Barcode Is the Bottom of a Stack
The UPC on the individual product is only the first level. The same item goes into an inner pack, then a master carton, then onto a pallet — and each of those levels gets its own barcode. Some are derived from the product's number; one is brand-new. Getting the hierarchy right is what lets a distribution center (DC) scan a single carton or pallet label and instantly know what's inside, in what quantity, without opening anything.
Miss a level, or number it wrong, and receiving breaks — the shipment doesn't match the paperwork, and the chargeback follows.
The Four Levels
Most consumer-goods shipments have up to four packaging levels, each with its own identifier:
- The consumer unit — the individual product a shopper buys.
- The inner pack — an intermediate pack (say, 6 units) inside the case, sometimes broken out or sold on its own.
- The case (master carton) — the shipping carton the factory packs and the DC receives.
- The pallet or shipping unit — the full logistic unit that moves as one.
The Consumer Unit: the UPC/GTIN
At the bottom is the product's UPC (Universal Product Code), carrying its GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) — the number covered in the previous article. Everything above it builds on this one.
Cases and Inner Packs: a Derived GTIN-14
Here's the "extends" part. The case and the inner pack each get their own GTIN-14 — a 14-digit number derived from the product's GTIN by adding a packaging indicator digit (1 through 8) to the front and recalculating the check digit. The inner pack might use indicator 1, the master case indicator 2 — same base product, different packaging levels, different numbers.
That GTIN-14 is printed on the carton, usually as an ITF-14 barcode (an Interleaved 2 of 5 symbol, 14 digits — the boxy barcode you see on shipping cartons) or inside a GS1-128 barcode. When the DC scans the case, the GTIN-14 tells its system exactly which product and how many units are inside.
So the case barcode isn't a new, unrelated number — it's your product's GTIN, extended one level up. Assign these deliberately; don't let the factory invent them.
Pallets and Shipping Units: the SSCC
The pallet is the exception — it does not get a derived GTIN. It gets an SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code): an 18-digit serial number, unique to that one physical pallet or shipping unit, encoded in a GS1-128 barcode on the pallet label.
Think of the SSCC as a license plate. It doesn't describe the contents by itself; it's a unique ID that points to them. It's carried on your Advance Ship Notice (ASN) — the electronic manifest you send ahead of the shipment. The ASN is a function of EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), the standardized computer-to-computer format retailers use to exchange business documents like purchase orders, ASNs, and invoices; the ASN is specifically the EDI 856 transaction. Because it arrives ahead of the goods, the DC scans one pallet label, matches the SSCC to the ASN, and receives the whole pallet's contents in a single scan. That's the entire point: one label, everything inside accounted for.
A GS1-128 barcode can carry more than the SSCC, using Application Identifiers (AIs) — small numeric prefixes that label each piece of data: (00) for the SSCC, (01) for a GTIN, (10) for a batch/lot number, (37) for the quantity, plus dates and more.
Why the Hierarchy Matters
Modern retail receiving is built on scanning these labels, not counting units. When the levels are numbered correctly and match the ASN:
- The DC receives a pallet in one scan instead of opening cartons.
- The case GTIN-14 confirms the right product and the right count.
- The paperwork, the barcodes, and the physical goods all agree.
When they don't — a missing case barcode, a wrong GTIN-14, an SSCC that isn't on the ASN — receiving stalls, the shipment gets flagged, and you get a chargeback for non-compliance. The retailer's routing guide spells out exactly which case and pallet labels they require and how they must look; follow it to the letter.
Keeping It Straight
Every product ends up with a small family of numbers: its consumer-unit GTIN, an inner-pack GTIN-14, a case GTIN-14, and a fresh SSCC for every pallet you ship. Multiply that across a catalog and across every shipment, and the mapping gets easy to lose.
The importers who don't get tripped up keep one source of truth that ties each product's GTIN to its case and inner-pack GTIN-14s, and that generates a new SSCC for each logistic unit per shipment — so the labels, the ASN, and the goods always agree.
